Internists / Physicians in The Bahamas
Internal medicine is the branch of medicine that deals with all aspects of the diseases that affect adults, including diagnosis, prevention, treatment, and alleviation of symptoms. Doctors who specialize in internal medicine are called internists or physicians. While an internist can treat single diseases, he or she is also very effective at treating multiple diseases that occur simultaneously in the same patient. Internists are typically the ones to go to when a disease hasn’t been identified or controlled with regular treatments.
Internists typically tend to specialize in one area of medicine. Sometimes they specialize in a particular organ or a system of the body, and they go on to become endocrinologists, cardiologists, oncologists, gastroenterologists, etc. Other times, they specialize in a series of diseases that are related to a function of the body or an age range. Internists that specialize in functions go on to become experts in treatment of sleep disorders, infertility, sports medicine, etc. Those who specialize in an age range go on to become experts in pediatrics, adolescent medicine, geriatrics, etc.
Internists often work in hospitals, since they frequently treat patients with serious diseases or require complex equipment.
